Week 13: Global Warming.... Sense of Urgency?

To the scholars,

Welcome to Week 12 of our online discussion, I'm sure most of you already have strong opinions on the issue of Global Warming but if you haven't already heard of Al Gore's: An Inconvenient Truth than I wanted to introduce to you an interesting way of thinking on the issue of Global Warming. As you hear this point of view please don't think its a scientific law... It is a THEORY (data to support but not proven over and over again.) This weeks information isn't meant to change your way of thinking merely to challenge it. Lets hear your opinions on Al Gore's: An Inconvenient Truth

Week 12: Evolution, Was It Really What You Thought?

Scholars,

Make sure you get all those missing assignments in this week because there is not much time before the 2nd six weeks ends. This past week we discussed the topic of Evolution. Most of us came into this week with our own ideas of what Science thought of Evolution but I wanted to know if anything that we discussed this week was eye opening or new information to you. Post your thoughts and have a great week.

Week 11: Who Dun It?

Hey Scholars!!!

This week is our CSI week of Genetics. We have talked about bloodtyping and now we are discussing DNA Fingerprinting. For this weeks post you can either research and find out what bloodtype you are (hint: look at your birth cert.) or you can find a news article where DNA FingerPrinting helped solve a criminal case.

Good Luck Detectives

Sincerely,

Mr. D

Week 10: Albinism a rare genetic disorder

Hey Scholars!!!

Since we are covering Albinism this week, the rare autosomal recessive disorder. My challenge for you this week is to post a link to a great photograph of an organism with Albinism.

Week 9: Funny Biology Jokes

Scholars,

These past few weeks have been pretty stressful and I thought this week we could try to find our laughter again. So in an effort to increase laughter and find happiness in hard situations, this week's task is to find and post a funny (appropriate) Biology joke.

Week 8: Cell Growth and Cancers

Hey Scholars,

This week we are talking about cell growth and division. We discussed what happens when cells grow out of control... Cancers. There is a factoid that says 3 out of 4 people will be affected by cancer throughout their lives. For this week's post you can blog about someone close to you who has battled cancer or you can enlighten us with new cancer treatments that are being developed.

Week 7: Codons... its all about codes... secret agent man!!!!

Hey Scholars,

We are cruisin along.... This week we are discussion RNA and its involvement with Protein Synthesis. Proteins are what makes cells so different from one another and allow for cell specialization. It takes transcription and translation to construct these proteins and it involves alot of codons (set of three nitrogen bases) to do so. For this weeks post create your own coded message using the decoder handout that I gave in class on Tuesday. Keep it scholarly.

Week 4: Cellular Organelles

Hey Scholars,

This week we are discussing organelles of the cell and their function. Your task for this week is: If you could relate or "see yourself" as one organelle what would it be and why?

Have a great week!

Week 2: Biomolecules to the Max

Hey Scholars,

Its your friendly Neighborhood Biology Teacher.

For this weeks post, I would like you to analyze one full meal you had this week. I would like you to categorize each part as a Carbohydrate, Lipid, Protein, or Starch.

For the second part, I would like you to tell me which test we should run on each part of your meal to prove it falls in the right category. (Hint: Benedict's, Buiret's, Iodine, Brown Paper Bag)

Have a Great Week!

Week 15: Antibacterial Soap Effective or Not?

Hey Scholars!!!

I was doing some research this past weekend and found out alot about the effectiveness of different brands of AntiBacterial Soap (purell, etc). I challege you to do the same. We wash our hands (or are suppose to) constantly but does it really matter what type of soap we use? This week find me some information on if Antibacterial soap works better than regular. Week 1: Scientific Method

Scholars,

As we move through the protocol for scientific method this week, we realize how important it is to study others scientific research before conducting our own. For this weeks online assignment, I would like you to fing a Biological Article (periodical) (of your choice of topic) online, make sure the link to your article is in your post and discuss/ summarize the research you found.

(Abstracts are OK but Full Text is Preferred)

Here is a Hint: Go to Google, at the top of the page click More, then click Scholar, then all you have to do is type in the topic of your choice.
