Week 16: Antibacterial Soap Effective or Uneffective?

Hey Scholars!!!

I was doing some research this past weekend and found out alot about the effectiveness of different brands of AntiBacterial Soap (purell, etc). I challege you to do the same. We wash our hands (or are suppose to) constantly but does it really matter what type of soap we use? This week find me some information on if Antibacterial soap works better than regular. Week 13: Global Warming... More Help than Harm?

Hello Scholars,

Welcome to the Week 13 Post. I think that in the past few years the issue of human impact on the earth especially in the area of Carbon Emmissions has surrounded our Nation with a sense of urgency and sometimes fear. With our last weeks post on the topic of Al Gore's : THE INCONVIENENT TRUTH, I wanted to challenge our previous way of thinking by hearing an alternative point of view. Not everyone believes in Al Gore's Nobel Prize Winning piece. I'd like to introduce you to someone who has challenged the Al Gore way of thinking on global carbon emmissions. I realize that this may cause some of you to think about your beliefs on global warming but I guess thats the point. Post those thoughts and comments hear. Week 11: Evolution, Was It Really What You Thought?

For this weeks post you can either research and find out what bloodtype you are (hint: look at your birth cert.) or you can find a news article where DNA FingerPrinting helped solve a criminal case.

Week 8: Codons... its all about codes... secret agent man!!!!

Hey Scholars,

We are cruisin along.... This week we are discussion RNA and its involvement with Protein Synthesis. Proteins are what makes cells so different from one another and allow for cell specialization. It takes transcription and translation to construct these proteins and it involves alot of codons (set of three nitrogen bases) to do so. For this weeks post create your own coded message using the decoder handout that I gave in class on Wednesday. Keep it scholarly.

Week 6: Cell Growth and Cancers

Hey Scholars,

This week we are talking about cell growth and reproduction as well as what happens when this growth becomes uncontrolled. There is a factoid that says 3 out of 4 people will be directly affected by some type of cancer throughout their lives. I know that this is a scary statistic for most of you but science is working hard to find a cure or at least battle all types of cancer. I'm sure you are all aware by now of my direct connection with cancer (my dad having throat cancer from years of smoking) but I'm sure people close to you have been affected by cancer as well. For this weeks post you have two choices you can blog about someone close to you that has been affected by cancer and tell their story.... or... you can enlighten us with new cancer treatments that are being developed.

For this weeks post I would like you to analyze one FULL meal you had this week and I would like you to categorize and break down the whole meal as either: Carbohydrate (sugar), Protein, Lipid, or Starch.

For the second part I would like you to tell me what solution or test we could run to prove that each food belongs in each category. (Hint categorize as using BENEDICT'S Solution, BUIRET'S Solution, Iodine, Paper Bag)

WELCOME SCHOLARS OF 2ND SEMESTER BIOLOGY!!!

Welcome to Mr. D's online classroom!

Above is a virtual calender of our class activities and due dates for you to check if you forget to write it down in class. Throughout the semester there will be topics for you to discuss (comment or question) weekly. This is not a required activity but is very helpful to you who struggle with test taking. Ever week you post an "appropriate" comment to the topic at hand 5 Extra Credit points will be added to your overall Assessment Grade. For a six weeks grade there are 30 EC points available just for blogging once a week. All comments should pertain to the topic presensted by myself. Any inappropriate comments or questions will face steep consequences. This will be a fun and exciting way of utilizing technology to further our education about Biological topics. I look forward to reviewing all of your comments/questions on our first topic very soon.
