Week 2 Discussion Global Warming.... Sense of Urgency!

Welcome Scholars to Week 2 of our online discussion,

I'm sure most of you already have strong opinions on the issue of Global Warming but if you haven't already heard of Al Gore's: An Inconvenient Truth than I wanted to introduce to you an interesting way of thinking on the issue of Global Warming. As you hear this point of view please don't think its a scientific law... It is a THEORY (data to support but not proven over and over again.) This weeks information isn't meant to change your way of thinking merely to challenge it. Lets hear your opinions on Al Gore's: An Inconvenient Truth

The topic of global warming is a serious subject that affects our lives each and everyday. I agree with some of his points and disagree with others. Al Gore presents factual evidence on how the earth’s atmosphere is deteriorating because of our poor choices such as driving large gas guzzling vehicles, factories emitting greenhouse gases and rising global temperatures. The high price of gas that has affected our economy this summer is a sign of that. I don’t agree with him that it is a moral issue but a political one. Unless members of Congress and Senate vote on such things as restrictions on carbon emissions or energy alternatives things won’t change.

Global warming is a serious issue which we have been dealing with over the years. I whole - heartedly do not agree with Al Gore. Global warming is not a moral issue just because we drive cars and use electricity. Driving cars and using electricity does cause global warming since it releases fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions, but what are we supposed to do - stop driving cars, watching TV, and turning lights on?
Global warming might be the cause of natural disasters like hurricanes becoming more destructive, but no one can prove that. And we have always had hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Some of these natural disasters have been worse than others but you can't really prevent a hurricane or an earthquake. Another point Al Gore makes that is ridiculous is that he says terrorists aren’t the only thing we have to worry about. Well we all know that, but terrorists are more important right now than global warming because it doesn't really matter about using a little extra gas or electricity if everyone is dead because of terrorists. Now I don’t think we should stop focusing on global warming but we shouldn’t focus solely on it like Al Gore wants us to. Terrorists and the war is more important at the moment than global warming but we should also continue to focus on global warming as we have for many years to try to form a solution before this issue becomes more important and global warming is so high up that we can’t do anything about it. In the meantime as terrorists is a top priority companies should also try to come up with solutions to global warming such as making cars that use less gas and are less harmful than cars which run on a battery which uses a lot of electricity.

I beleive that global warming is one of the biggest issues that the world has ever come to i think that people should stop complaning how we should stop using as much gas or electricy and simply figure out a way to solve the depletion of ozone. i think that americans still use vehicles because they think somone will just find some solution and then everyone can go back to normal.and until they relize this their just going to keep doing it. but i think that al gore should have tried to reach the americans a diffrent way

I believe that global warming is very important and serious factor these days. I agree With Al Gore on the whole gas and electricity isssue. Us Americans do take advantage of those things. But I also believe that there could be some other defense to that. I disagree with the fact that he thinks terrorists arent as important as global warming, to me they are both equally important. But however, we need to concentrate more on terrorism.

global warming is a serious issue. it is a cause of many environmental dangers and is something we are still trying to avoid. Al Gore's statement about stronger storms i think is a bit true, due to the fact of the 3 hurricanes Gustav, Hannah, and soon Ike will make landfall in the US. thats 3 hurricanes within one month. Global warming, to me, is not only a moral issue but also a political one because of the way congress and the senate handle things as well as the next president and current economy issues. Not only an environmental issue we'd have to worry about, but if sea level does rise 20 feet, overpopulation would also be a big concern. we need to save ourselves from natural disaster, we need to save our environment, we need to save the earth

Unlike Al Gore, as well as most Americans, I do not believe global warming is an extremely serious issue. Al Gore states in his documentary that humans are to blame for global warming. Although I believe humans contribute to global warming, they are not the chief cause. The Earth is undergoing a period of climactic change between glacial periods known as an interglacial period. During these periods, the Earth's average temperature increases, and glacial ice recedes. I believe that this interglacial period is causing temperatures around the globe to increase. However, humans are contributing to the increase in temperature by releasing more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. I believe we can lessen our impact on global warming by cutting back our greenhouse gas emissions, but i do not believe we can reverse or even stop global warming until the Earth itself is ready.

Al Gore also relates global warming to increased hurricane strength and frequency. Although this seems like a very good explanation for stronger hurricanes, it may not be the case. Although more hurricanes have ravaged the Atlantic this decade, the number of hurricanes worldwide has not increased. Many people also believe that the strength of hurricanes has drastically increased this decade due to global warming. While the strength of hurricanes this decade has indeed increased in relation to those of the previous few decades, the Earth has experienced many brief periods of inceased hurricane strength. Once again, i believe humans are contributing to the increase in hurricane strength and frequency we are experiencing, but i do not believe they are the chief cause.

i think that al gore's idea's of global warming are of the mark. i think te people polluting and causing all this harm to the planet has something that deals with it somewhatl, but i think that we must go about this on a even larger scale. did we ever to stop and think that our rotation around the sun has changed somehow or that the other planets rotation has messed up and opened up a even bigger hole for sun to hit the earth. as far as hole's in the ozone goes we ourselves could of made those by launching ships, satellites and missles in to orbit using different types of fuel.

I belive that global warming should be taken seriously by everone, many people take it as somthing that itsnt really effecting us or are just to lazy to take the pre-cautions. Pepole dont really fear the destrucation that global warming can bring because they would rather just relie on other pepople to do it for them and then blame those people when nothing is working. Global warming requires a global effort, Al gore makes good points but he should have been compaltly true to the cause of the issue and been a little less like well you should of elected me. Unless americans and everone else starts taking action the world we know and love well end soon

Global Warming is very serious. Our life because of Global Warming will change if we cant find away to stop it. People just need to find out what they can do to prevent it and we need to actually start caring before we destroy our own planet. I agree with everything Al Gore said because everything he said to me was correct even if it hasnt been proven i still think hes correct. We are the ones Causing Global Warming. Every year its gettin hotter and hotter if we dont stop then everything is going to change the heat will end up changing everything. Everyone keeps saying that we need to stop using Cars and electricity but if you think we wont be able to stop using them. Cars lets us do everything if you can just find out another way to use a car without much pollution then thats good. but i agree with Al Gore we need to stop Global warming

This is a very serious subject and has been for many years. Al Gore has many interesting points but I think that this issue is must be taken in to the hands of the government and people(I know it is already but we have to try harder to stop it. I do agree that this has to stop like he said the global warming is causing glaciers to melt which will flood the earth. He said trhe ten hottest years have been in the last 14 I agree with that fully if you look at charts from the past you will see an enormous change in temperature and a result sea level. Soon global warming will take full effect if something is not done. I myslf have not seen snow in a long time and i think, no I know it is a cause of global warming. Stronger storms are coming and they will get stronger as global warming continues. Things won't change until everyone takes action. i'm not saying we don't have other issues right now but thye most important of them all right now is the global warming and the war. Emmissions of large amounts of gas that 6 billion people and many factories let off will have to be dealt with as soon as possible(ASAP). Stop leaving lights on when your not there it needs to stop. Lets all work together to save mother earth we've got something very valuable lets not take it for granite like everything else lets save mother earth!!!

I believe the topic of global warming is a serious matter. Some people are ignorant to it and don't care, but it affects our lives everyday. Al Gore states that global warming is due to moral issues. I can't say that i agree but i do see where he is coming from. Earths atmosphere is deteriorating due to our poor choices, and everyone, and everything, is suffering from it whether they realize it or not. Things from driving huge vehicles that use up tons of gas, to large factories, and even how much pesticides we use are deteriorating our earth. I'm not saying that we should stop using these all together, but to limit what we do and use, and to be resourceful.

This is like wayyyyyyyy terrible and now I wanna do something to help thre environment. So on myspace I got this one app. and it helps save rainforests I think. But people are really dumb and need to get their head out of their butts and try saving not only the earth, but their life and millions of others. And this also got me thinking that I should join the peace core and do all that kind of good stuff instead of being a lazy bum and killing the environment more. Al Gore=My Hero!!!

Global warming is killing our planet, and it continues to produce serious issues every day. As I watched Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, I began to understand his words in which he states that “our ability to live is what’s at stake. To me that means the more in depth global warming becomes and the more the ice melts and our land becomes polluted, the harder it will be for us to survive. God only gave us one life and our actions and reactions to things matter, and global warming must be stopped before the human race is.
We can help global warming by Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:
Reduce means to lower the amount of energy we consume and to start using renewable energy sources such as wind power and solar power.
Reuse means to use products made by recycled materials. Also we could make a compost bin with our organic wastes to plant trees or shrubs for the garden.
Recycle to discard of all the plastics, papers and metals to the best of our abilities.

Global warming has been talked of for many years. I agree that we contribute to this happending to the earth, with our cars, and other ways of pollution to the ozone layer, but it is a natural proccess too. What we do to the planet just makes the whole effect speed up. Everybody seems to be wanting to help out by recycling for example, but we need somethign drastic to make a diffrence. The ozone layer will eventually become nothing if todays society continues like they are. People of the congress should state that only so many emmisons can be polluted in the air. That would limit it, and hopefully make a difference.

Everone around the world talks about how tell will stop using car, buses, taxies, and any other transportaion that is possible, i think that instead of talking about what your going to do you should just do what you say your going to do, i think that a way to help stop using gas is if people start walking or taking a bike to where they are heading, it's worth a try after all.

Global warming is a serious issue. First of all it is heating up our planet causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. This could lead up to drastic weather changes that are more severe. Some people are already trying to reduce these carbon emissions into our ozone by being such the word eco friendly. Some scientists are working hours on end to help out our situation and others think that we will pollute earth so bad one day that we will have to move to another planet, Mars. Cars, power plants, and even our computer monitors can contribute to this global epidemic. Some people think that this situation can be fixed one day and it will all go away. Thats just it. It wont go away. Carbon emissions can stay in our ozone for years on end. One of the only things we can do as of right now is to reduce emissions as much as possible.

Global warming is one of the biggest issues of today. Global warming has had many negative affects on the world, including rising sea levels, high levels of greenhouse gases, painful gas prices, and catastrophic storms.
Global warming effects everyone.
However, I don't agree with Al Gore, however, when he says global warming is a moral issue. In the day and age we live in, many things require energy (your home, your car, your iPod, your computer, and so on) We should however, try cutting back on our energy uses or search for other forms of energy. But unless citizens and even our government work on ways to take action, global warming will only worsen.

I think that Al Gore is right in some ways, as he is wrong in some ways. We do use cars and gas a lot, but does that really mean that we are betraying our planet? Or does it simply mean that we are using the resources we need in everyday life? I think that if we do do some of the things he mentioned that the effect of global warming will be lessoned, but I do not believe that global warming itself will dissappear.

Global warming is a very serious subject! Our atmosphere is being destoryed everyday by us polluting. We are adding many of the reasons of why global warming is becoming so bad. I agree with what Al Gore was saying for the most part, but some of the things we are doing, we cannot change. We cannot all stop driving. Its just impossible. Many things wont change, but i agree with him for the most part.

I completely agree with Al Gore but i disagree with the fact that it is a theory. we have enough evidence to convince a five year old that it is that people that are doing this. it basically started back in the industrial revolution when man created factories and engines, but above all smoke, smog, and environmental damage. If the world stayed in the middle ages the world wouldn't have this crises. On top of that i agree with "blackmamba24" if the Congress doesn't allow the United States to have another industrial movement we wont be able to go towards fuel cell engines or alternative resources and the world will die quicker due to mass over population, which means faster, Irreversible, environmental damages.

I think if everyone in the entire world watched Al Gore's movie than they would want to help for about five minutes. Global Warming is a very serious situation. But the people in the world are very selfish and expect everything to be done for them. They want to make money and not care about polluting the earth and not care about the repercautions of it. In the trailer it said "Did the planet betray us or did we betray the planet?" and I think we took advantage of the planet and betrayed it and now the planet is betraying us. I think with time this situation will get so much worse and if we start now then it might not be such a tragic situation in the future.

weLl I think as of right now is that we should worry about about global warming.. Because on the lil trailer thing al gore showed..I think that we should help. I think we could stop usin as much gas and electricity.. N try and save more.. I kno that we could try n do sumthing about it.. But Im sure alot of
People don't really worry about it because it's not on their mind right now..but in the future it will be when something bad happens to us in some years..

And jus to
Let everybody know. I'm on my iPod touch doing this lol. Crazy right.

Global Warming is a very strong subject. We been polluting the world since we started smoking and starting fires and etc. I do agree with Al Gore Strongly but i mean how can we stop Global Warming. I Mean people are still going to drive instead of walking, and people are still going 2 smoke even if we asked them to stop.
So bascailly we are just going to keep hurting the earth but Al Gore did make me open my eyes up to alot of things.

House and Democratic leaders are thus trying to provide cover for members facing opponents in the November election who are using the gas price issue against them. They will now be able to say that they took the tough vote in favor of offshore drilling. Greenpeace and several other grassroots environmental pressure groups are trying to help this operation by attacking the bill as a sellout to big oil. This might fool some people into thinking that Democrats in Congress have now caved in to public pressure on the drilling issue.

I think Global Warming is a huge problem. Ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, and the over all temperature of the earth is rising a few degress every few years. I completely agree with Al, we need to make alternative fuels and stop using up all of the oil in our planet.
