Week 8 Discussion- Too Much Cell Growth? Cancers

Hey Scholars,

This week we are talking about cell growth and reproduction as well as what happens when this growth becomes uncontrolled. There is a factoid that says 3 out of 4 people will be directly affected by some type of cancer throughout their lives. I know that this is a scary statistic for most of you but science is working hard to find a cure or at least battle all types of cancer. I'm sure you are all aware by now of my direct connection with cancer (my dad having throat cancer from years of smoking) but I'm sure people close to you have been affected by cancer as well. For this weeks post you have two choices you can blog about someone close to you that has been affected by cancer and tell their story.... or... you can enlighten us with new cancer treatments that are being developed.

Have A Great Week

Mr. D

This person should stop smoking because they should know the risks that can happen to them. They should realize that it doesnt only affect tem but the people around them. They should try to find an alternative to the reason of why they are smoking. They should also realize that some people that have cancer dont deserve it and didnt do anything to get it and also take that into consideration

My Aunt Sissie has cervical cancer, and has became really sick. About twenty years ago she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer but had surgery and the promblem was gone. and know this horrible cancer has overtaken her life again. Due to her havin this she has dropped down to ninety-four pounds and she is fifty- eight years old she is a worshiper of god a lover and espically a fighter. I wish cancer was a non existent factor because it has and is taking so many pepoles life. the sad thing is to me that pepole only have the strength to fight for so long.

My great - grandpa used to smoke a lot for many years. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and went to the hospital for treatment. I was about one when he died so I don't remember him. Every one else in my family though remembers him just lying there in that hospital bed and how horrible it all was.
A lot people who smoke think that they can keep on smoking and not get cancer, emphysema, or any of the other effects from smoking. And there are people who have been smoking for years and nothing bad has happened to them but it still could and then there are all those other people who do have cancer and have to fight for their life. These people, "the lucky ones" who nothing has happened to yet should think about all the consequences of smoking before they light up another cigarette.

My grandma had breast cancer twice. But what I thought was crazy about the story is the fact that she couldn't do anything about it. She had to just live with it because she couldn't afford the medical bills that would come with the cancer. She had to take care of her 4 kids and keep food on the table, which she was already having a hard time with. I was really happy to hear how all of this turned out. Her cancer is now gone. She hasn' had it again since the last time. Shes active and fun as ever. But still a cranky old lady. lol

A potential new cancer treatment stemming directly from a Liggins Institute discovery is being developed by Neuren Pharmaceuticals. Possible targets include breast, colon, lung and prostate cancers. The Liggins discovery revealed that proteins known as Trefoil Factors (TFFs) are key culprits in tumour growth and malignancy. Blocking TFFs is therefore a promising treatment. I beleive that this has great potential and will help with further studies with this terrible illness.
